The republic was one of my first post apocalyptic novels I've read start to finish. I love that it puts us, the reader, into a futuristic world, but an imperfect one. Even with all the advance in technology, weaponry and communication-- take away a basic human need, and the whole house of cards comes crashing down.This being a collection of compiled epsiodes with a rotating ensamble cast of characters is a real treat. It's very picturesque and plot driven, the pacing and variety is mixed up nicely to really flesh out the world as you progress through the story. The geography and locations to me are easy to understand and visualize.
The book opens with a hard hitting first installment with an over ambitious politician Kai, who really wants to do good, but intent is simply not enough. Ari who gets sucked up into the whirlwind of desperation and chaos, he will have to find his own place in this world, and accept the consequences that come with it.
Po is the strongest storyline in the book, and the most fun to follow. She's not a leader, nor does she appear to strive to be. She's one in the making that realizes her actions have meaning. What do you do with that attention? How do you decide who your actions will serve, and which ones are the right ones to make?
This is an even, rolling hills type paced book that reads well in multiple sittings. I enjoyed this casually consuming over time and looking forward to more from this author.

Tales of the Republic MG Herron Books Reviews
It was difficult to put this book down, much like most of the other works I've read by MG Herron. The worlds he creates are striking and his characters are authentic, grounded, and unpredictable in a natural way. Fans of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic action will definitely get wrapped up in the stories so much so that, like his other works, you won't want this book to end. Well paced, thought provoking, and made me think of a less-dense Dune at times.

In the aftermath of World War Three, refugees from all countries flood into the open-immigration country previously known as China. Decades later, the country now known as The Republic of Enshi is near collapse after a failed rice crop brings starvation to the area. Strict rationing will be needed to allow anyone to survive the coming winter. When the Magistrate tries to tell the people about rationing, a food riot breaks out, killing the Magistrate. A year later, King Valley is the last significant farmland remaining in the Republic. Insurgents operate under the name 'Citizen'.
No one knows whether it was the government -- hoping to forcibly reverse immigration -- or Citizen who used the riot to destroy the seeds of engineered rice that could have saved the populace.
A well-crafted view of ecological collapse and efforts to reverse it.
You know an author has you when all it takes is one book and you're a fan for life.
"Tales of the Republic" takes place in a futuristic world where the government is corrupt, the people are angry and there's a huge food shortage going on. Three ingredients that create an action-packed, nail-biting, dystopian style novel. The author weaves you through the novel using the povs of three main characters, each character offering a different perspective on the world because they each come from a different class and power level in the society.
Reminiscent of our own world and the Tianamen square protests of the '80s, author M.G. Herron offers a shockingly true story of a reality that we have lived. With a cast of characters that display their strengths in unique ways and make up for each other's "weaknesses", this story was developed to leave a historical mark about the broken relationship between government and society, as well as the strength of the people.
To add a few more good remarks here, this story deviates from the norm by taking place in an Asian country and offers something similar to a reverse history. Instead of Asians fleeing as refugees to European or white-majority countries, it's the opposite and the white-minority suffers the challenges of refugees.
Now, this story was almost everything I could want in a scifi novel. Actually, most of my issues aren't with the story itself. The concept and the outline are well-developed. However, the execution lacked in several areas
(1) I think the novel could have done with one more round of editing. Most of the errors I found were in the spelling, something simple that should have been caught by an editor. The fact that it occurred so frequently frustrated me.
(2) There were a few tiny plot holes that could have easily gone unnoticed. I'm not sure if the author missed them or if the dialogue wasn't properly edited to explain them. Either way, they tossed up some red flags for me.
(3) The lead female character had "awkward" character development. Overall, I liked her, even admired her character. However, who she was in the middle of the novel seemed a step above who she was in the beginning, except there was no transition between these two steps.
(4) There is no writer that can write in every genre and that's a fact. This novel is all scifi but there is a hint of romance that, in my opinion, was not always done well. I could see the sparks between the characters but writing about their emotions didn't always come off as realistic.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was reminiscent of the style of R A Heilein's future history. Very well written.
The Republic is a dystopian view of what the world could be like post World War III. This is a standalone novel. There is a lot of violence. While the book was well written, I found the storyline and characters to be average. Don't think this book isn't worth reading, because it is worth reading. I just didn't find it to be spectacularly original and better than average.
